Turtle Cake



1/2 cup shortening

1 1/2 cup sugar

2 eggs


Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and beat until creamy. Sift in the dry ingredients. Stir in the rest. Mix until well combined.



1 2/3 cup flour

2/3 cup cocoa

1 1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. salt

1 1/2 cup buttermilk (can be substituted with milk mixed with 1 tsp. vinegar)

1 tsp. vanilla


Bake in a greased 9 x13 pan at 350F. Bake for 15 minutes, pour over the caramel sauce, then bake another 15 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.


Caramel Sauce

1 cup butter

1 cup sweetened condensed milk

1 cup sugar

1/4 cup maple syrup (or corn syrup)


In a medium saucepan over medium heat, cook for 15 minutes. Immediately after removing from the heat pour over the cake. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of chocolate chips over the cake and return the cake to the oven to finish baking.


1/2 cup chocolate chips -sprinkle on the cake after pouring on the sauce.
